XPeng CEO He Xiaopeng Criticizes Robot Industry for 'Brainstem-Level' Locomotion
XPeng Chairman He Xiaopeng asserts that many humanoid robot companies mistake basic stability for advanced control, revealing aggressive commercialization plans for the IRON robot beginning Q3 2026.
XPeng Chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng has issued a pointed critique of the humanoid robotics industry, asserting that many competitors have fundamentally misunderstood the hierarchy of robotic control systems by conflating basic stability with sophisticated motor intelligence.
In a recent interview with 21st Century Business Herald, He distinguished between primitive locomotion capabilities and true cerebellar function. "Many robot companies today haven't even developed the 'cerebellum' properly," He stated. "Making a robot walk forward steadily with monotonous steps—that isn't a developed cerebellum. At best, that's the 'brainstem' and 'spinal cord.'"
The neurological analogy highlights a technical distinction in robotics: while the "brainstem" and "spinal cord" manage reflexive, repetitive movements, the "cerebellum" represents adaptive coordination, dynamic balance, and fluid motion planning. He emphasized that recent breakthroughs in large language models have created viable pathways for developing the robotic "brain," reinforcing XPeng's strategic commitment to simultaneously advancing both high-level cognitive capabilities and bipedal locomotion systems.
The comments accompanied significant updates on XPeng's own humanoid platform, IRON. First unveiled in November 2025 and marketed as "the most humanoid humanoid robot," IRON features a biomimetic architecture including a human-like spine, artificial musculature, fully wrapped flexible skin, and 22 degrees of freedom in its dexterous hands. The system employs a natural "cat-like" gait engineered to replicate human movement dynamics rather than mechanical stepping patterns.
During the company's first-quarter earnings call on May 28, He detailed the production roadmap for the next-generation IRON. The mass-production hardware and software stack is currently progressing through the ET2 integration phase, with a public unveiling scheduled for the third quarter of 2026. XPeng aims to achieve high-volume production by year-end, initially deploying units for trial commercialization in XPeng retail locations before expanding deliveries to domestic and international commercial customers starting in 2027.
He projected that beginning next year, revenue streams from humanoid robot hardware sales and AI model licensing will become significant contributors to XPeng Group's overall revenue and gross margin growth, signaling the company's strategic expansion beyond automotive manufacturing into embodied artificial intelligence and robotics-as-a-service markets.
