Xiaohongshu Cracks Down on AI-Managed Accounts to Preserve 'Authentic Community'
Chinese lifestyle platform Xiaohongshu has announced a strict crackdown on accounts operated via 'AI hosting' tools, which automate content creation and simulate human interaction. The platform states it will ban accounts primarily run by AI and implement tiered penalties for occasional misuse, aiming to protect the community's 'authentic foundation'.
Xiaohongshu, the popular Chinese social and lifestyle platform, has launched a significant crackdown on accounts operated by artificial intelligence. In an official announcement released on March 10, 2026, the platform's administrator stated it will strictly govern accounts using 'AI hosting' models to automate content and simulate human interaction.
The platform's core stance is a firm defense of community authenticity. The announcement emphasizes that Xiaohongshu "strictly prohibits any behavior that uses technical means to simulate real people, engage in non-authentic content creation, or false interaction."
Defining the Problem: AI Hosting The platform identified a growing issue where some users employ 'AI hosting' tools to automatically generate content, publish notes, and simulate real-person interactions in comments, private messages, and group chats. This practice, Xiaohongshu argues, undermines the genuine sharing and sincere communication that form the "warm foundation" of its community, built by hundreds of millions of users sharing real-life experiences.
New Governance Measures Effective immediately, Xiaohongshu will implement a two-tiered penalty system:
- For ordinary accounts that occasionally use AI hosting to write, post notes, or interact, the platform will apply graded penalties based on the severity of the violation, including warnings and restrictions on content distribution.
- For accounts registered directly through AI hosting tools, or whose entire public note history is AI-generated and posted, the platform will impose an outright ban.
A Call for Responsible AI Use While taking a hard line against fully automated accounts, Xiaohongshu's announcement includes a call for users to "use AI tools reasonably" during the creation process. The fundamental expectation remains that users should "insist on sharing real experiences and feelings as real people" to collectively safeguard the community's authentic character.
The platform is also mobilizing its user base for enforcement, urging members to report any suspected AI-hosted accounts or related content through the in-app reporting function immediately.
This move positions Xiaohongshu at the forefront of a critical challenge for social platforms in the AI era: balancing the innovative use of generative AI tools with the preservation of human-led, authentic community engagement that users value.
