StepStar CEO Yin Qi on STEPX Launch: 'We Wanted to Listen, But We Did It Anyway' – Only AI-Native Hardware

At the STEPX terminal brand launch, StepStar chairman Yin Qi admitted industry veterans urged him not to enter hardware, but the company pushed ahead with the STEPX Neo smartphone, designed exclusively as an AI-native device running the Step AOS agent operating system.

At the launch event for its new terminal brand and next-generation agent strategy, StepStar officially unveiled STEPX and its first product, the STEPX Neo smartphone. During a media roundtable with Sina Tech, company chairman Yin Qi revealed that he had consulted many friends in the hardware industry before making the move.

“The advice was unanimous – everyone told us to listen to them and not touch hardware,” Yin said. “We really wanted to follow that advice, but in the end we decided to do it anyway.”

Yin emphasized that StepStar is not aiming to produce a conventional smartphone. “What we want to build is a truly large-model-native AI terminal, an AI-native hardware device,” he explained.

The STEPX Neo introduces a rear interactive secondary display and runs on Step AOS, a new operating system built from the ground up for AI agents. The company also announced its first wave of ecosystem partners, covering a range of major Chinese platforms including food delivery (Meituan), office productivity (WPS), video editing (CapCut), travel services (Ctrip, Amap, DiDi), payments (Alipay), search and maps (Baidu, Baidu Maps), e-commerce (JD.com), and social media (Weibo).

While the partnerships signal broad app support, StepStar did not disclose technical specifications, pricing, or a launch date for the STEPX Neo. The move marks a bold entry into the fiercely competitive smartphone market, betting that deep integration of large language models and agent capabilities can differentiate its device from established players.
