Moonshot AI (月之暗面) has initiated beta testing for Kimi Work, positioning the tool as a general-purpose local AI agent targeting knowledge workers. Announced on June 3, the beta is available through the company's latest test versions of its Mac and Windows desktop clients.
At its core, Kimi Work runs on Kimi Code, providing foundational local agent capabilities including skill installation, scheduled task execution, and integration with specialized databases covering finance, scientific research, and legal sectors. The platform inherits professional skills from the online version of Kimi Agent, such as website construction and PowerPoint generation.
A key differentiator is the built-in Kimi WebBridge, enabling the agent to operate browsers autonomously. Users can describe objectives in natural language without opening terminals, writing commands, or configuring environments. The system autonomously decomposes tasks, executes them in parallel, calls appropriate tools, manages browser sessions, creates and organizes folders, and delivers finished work products including documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.
For complex, long-duration projects, Kimi Work supports agent clustering, automatically assembling teams of up to 300 sub-agents to handle intricate workflows collaboratively.
In a notable meta-development, Moonshot revealed that Kimi Work itself was substantially built using Kimi Code. The company's engineers utilized AI coding agents to produce the Mac and Windows beta clients within one week, generating over 50,000 lines of effective code, of which 92% was autonomously created by AI.
