The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has officially launched a massive domestic intelligent computing cluster, marking a significant milestone in China's push for "computing autonomy" in the development of large AI models.
Activated on July 9 in Shaoguan, the cluster represents a total investment of 5.5 billion yuan. It is deployed with 11,520 Ascend domestic AI accelerator cards, delivering a total computing power of 9,000P. Reports indicate that the overall performance of the cluster reaches an internationally leading level.
As a key component of the national integrated computing network's Greater Bay Area hub, the facility aims to serve the region's AI industry. By linking upstream and downstream enterprises involving domestic chips, operating systems, and algorithm frameworks, the project seeks to establish a complete computing ecosystem from infrastructure to application, driving the large-scale adoption of domestic training frameworks and processors.
Liu Zhijun, General Manager of the Cloud Network Development Department at China Telecom Guangdong, emphasized that the cluster is entirely domestically researched and produced. He noted that this demonstrates autonomous and controllable capabilities that align with next-generation national security and development requirements. While currently focused on scientific research, the cluster will eventually support broader computing applications across the Greater Bay Area, including large-scale inference and digital transformation for small and medium-sized enterprises, bolstering the regional digital economy.
Notably, the project achieved rapid delivery. By coordinating power supply, facilities, liquid cooling, computing, and networking, the entire construction, debugging, and launch process was completed in just 90 days.
