Former Alibaba VP Ren Geng Teams Up With Ex-Li Auto Exec to Launch Embodied AI Startup
Ren Geng, former Alibaba Vice President and President of Alibaba Cloud China, is reportedly launching an embodied AI startup with Lang Xianpeng, former head of Li Auto's intelligent driving unit. The venture, which has already secured significant funding, aims to develop a full-stack embodied intelligence platform targeting the humanoid robot market, directly competing with Tesla's efforts.
A new heavyweight contender is entering the embodied artificial intelligence arena. According to a report by Leifeng Network, former Alibaba Vice President and President of Alibaba Cloud China, Ren Geng, is set to launch a startup focused on embodied AI, partnering with Lang Xianpeng, the former head of intelligent driving at Li Auto.
The new company, expected to be registered imminently, will be led by Ren Geng as Founder and CEO, with Lang Xianpeng serving as Co-founder and CTO. Their mission is to build a full-stack embodied intelligence platform, positioning it as a direct competitor to Tesla's humanoid robot project, Optimus.
Despite not yet being formally established, the venture has already generated significant buzz in investment circles. Reports indicate that during the recent Spring Festival period, the project attracted strong interest from multiple top-tier investment institutions. Several rounds of financing have reportedly been oversubscribed and finalized. One investor described the partnership between Ren and Lang as a "blockbuster combination" for the embodied AI industry.
The Founders' Pedigree
Ren Geng, born in 1982, brings extensive experience in large-scale tech operations and leadership. His career includes senior roles at Huawei, where he served as Deputy General Manager of Huawei Thailand and General Manager of Huawei Myanmar. He joined Alibaba in 2015, holding key positions including President of Alibaba Cloud China and Chief of Staff for Alibaba Cloud.
Lang Xianpeng is credited with building Li Auto's intelligent driving research and development capabilities from the ground up after joining the company in 2018. Under his leadership, the team achieved a significant milestone in 2024 by being the first to fully deploy a dual-system architecture combining "end-to-end" and "Visual Language Model (VLM)" technologies to its vehicle fleet.
Lang's departure from Li Auto follows recent internal shifts. In late January, it was reported that he would transition to become the head of Li Auto's hardware division, focusing on robotics development and reporting directly to company president Ma Donghui, while stepping away from autonomous driving duties. The news of his departure to co-found this new startup emerged less than a month later.
The launch of this startup underscores the intensifying competition and high-stakes talent race in the embodied AI and robotics sector, as tech veterans from internet and automotive giants converge on what is seen as the next frontier of intelligent systems.
