The decision was reportedly made in February, with the company concluding that, for the foreseeable future, this product line is no longer considered a viable strategic direction.
The core reason cited for the pause is an internal assessment that it is currently very difficult to develop truly differentiated capabilities for AI-powered glasses in the present market landscape.
This development contradicts earlier reports about the product's progress. Previously, the Science and Technology Innovation Board Daily had爆料 that the Doubao large language model was being jointly developed with Runxin Technology and Lao Fengxiang for integration into AI glasses. Those reports suggested a price point under 2,000 RMB and a target launch date in early 2026.
Further reports from Lanjing News in January 2026 indicated that the Doubao smart glasses had entered the shipment preparation phase. Supply chain information at the time suggested a first-generation production run of approximately 100,000 units. Notably, the reported sales strategy deviated from standard consumer electronics; the initial batch was said to be intended primarily for distribution to dedicated 'Doubao' users rather than a general public market release.
In response to the latest reports of the project's suspension, a Doubao representative told First Financial that the rumors were 'untrue' and that there are currently 'no明确的销售计划' (no明确的 sales plans).
The conflicting information leaves the future of ByteDance's foray into wearable AI hardware unclear.
