ByteDance's Doubao Unveils 'Task Mode' for Autonomous AI Execution, Rebrands Deep Reasoning as 'Expert Mode'
ByteDance has widely released a new 'Task Mode' for its Doubao AI assistant, enabling autonomous agent capabilities including scheduled execution and content generation, while upgrading its deep reasoning features under the new 'Expert Mode' designation.
ByteDance is restructuring its AI assistant Doubao around agentic capabilities, launching a new "Task Mode" that enables autonomous end-to-end task execution while rebranding its deep reasoning features as "Expert Mode." The update, which moved from grayscale testing to wide release, replaces the previous interface options with a three-tier system: Quick, Expert, and Task.
The newly launched Task Mode positions Doubao as an AI agent rather than a conversational assistant. Unlike traditional single-turn dialogue systems, this mode autonomously handles task decomposition, step planning, tool invocation, and final delivery without requiring users to guide the AI through multiple rounds of prompting. Users input a clear objective, and Doubao independently searches the web, generates content, and produces deliverables.
Current capabilities under Task Mode include zero-code webpage generation—allowing users to create personal portfolios or event landing pages within minutes—one-click PowerPoint creation with automatic research and content framing, and data visualization analysis that converts Excel uploads into charts including bar graphs, line charts, and funnel diagrams. The system also supports scheduled tasks, enabling background automation for batch report generation, data organization, and image creation at preset times.
Simultaneously, the previous "Thinking Mode" has been upgraded and renamed "Expert Mode," shifting focus from execution to cognitive depth. Powered by ByteDance's newly released Doubao Large Model 2.0 Pro with native agent architecture, this mode targets complex reasoning scenarios such as mathematical problem-solving, long-document processing, and legal document logic verification.
The three modes now serve distinct use cases: Quick Mode prioritizes speed for simple queries and information retrieval; Expert Mode delivers analytical depth for industry analysis and complex problem-solving; while Task Mode handles autonomous execution when users have clear objectives requiring minimal supervision.
Regarding monetization, Doubao maintains a freemium structure. Basic functions—including daily Q&A, fundamental writing tasks, and simple image generation—remain free for all users. Premium capabilities such as PPT generation, data analysis, software development, and financial analysis fall under the paid "Professional Version" tiers. Pricing is structured in three levels: Standard at ¥68 monthly or ¥688 annually; Enhanced at ¥200 monthly or ¥2,048 annually; and Professional at ¥500 monthly or ¥5,088 annually.
The restructuring signals ByteDance's strategic pivot toward differentiated AI service tiers, balancing free accessibility for casual users with high-value agentic automation for professional workflows.
