Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 Blocks Basic Biology Questions Over Bioweapon Fears
Anthropic's newest flagship AI model Claude Fable 5 refuses to answer fundamental biology questions—including high school-level queries about cells and mitochondria—as part of aggressive safety restrictions designed to prevent misuse for bioweapon development.
Anthropic has launched Claude Fable 5, branding it as the company's most powerful AI model available to the public, yet the system intentionally refuses to answer basic biology questions that high school students routinely study. Rather than lacking the knowledge, the model has been deliberately restricted from discussing biological concepts ranging from cellular structures to disease mechanisms.
According to IT Home and tests conducted by The Verge, Fable 5—which Anthropic classifies as its first publicly available "Mythos-level" model—rejects queries about fundamental topics including cell membranes, mitochondria (described as the cell's "power plant"), prions, and the functioning of mRNA vaccines. The restrictions extend to everyday medical questions such as the causes of hay fever, mechanisms of asthma medication, antibiotic resistance, and Ebola transmission. When confronted with these prompts, the model redirects users to Anthropic's previous flagship, Claude Opus 4.8, which provides full answers.
The sweeping limitations are intentional, Anthropic confirmed. "As we launch Claude Fable 5, our first Mythos-level model, we recognize that AI capabilities for real-world scientific research have advanced significantly, and bad actors could potentially leverage such models to conduct high-risk biological research," said spokesperson Parul Maheshwari. The company employs classifiers to intercept requests related to biological weapons but has opted for a "conservative" approach that blocks the vast majority of biology-related inquiries to ensure safe deployment.
While Anthropic has identified four primary restriction areas for Fable 5—chemistry, biology, cybersecurity, and model distillation—the constraints on biological topics are notably more stringent than other domains. The model will briefly explain TNT without providing manufacturing instructions, discuss chlorine gas as a chemical weapon, and explain iPhone security settings or nuclear fusion principles. However, it refuses to discuss the nerve agent sarin and, along with Opus 4.8, completely shuts down conversations about manufacturing anthrax.
The aggressive filtering has resulted in obvious overreach, blocking benign educational content while allowing certain hazardous chemistry discussions. Anthropic acknowledges these "false positives" represent a calculated trade-off. "We made this choice to allow users to experience the model's powerful capabilities early while avoiding potential risks," Maheshwari stated. The company is working to refine its detection mechanisms to reduce误判 (misjudgments) and plans to release versions of Mythos-level models without these biological safeguards for verified professionals in life sciences and pharmaceutical research.
Anthropic declined to comment on whether this restricted-release model will become standard practice for future AI deployments.
